Travis County African American Settlement Survey
Project Name: Travis County African American Settlement Survey
Project Location: Travis County, Texas
Project Type: Historic Resources Survey
Owner: Travis County Historical Commission
In partnership with the Travis County Historical Commission (TCHC), Hicks & Company historians managed a historic resources survey to identify communities in Travis County that were historically predominantly African American and to document the existing condition of the historic-age resources in those communities. Responsibilities included archival research at numerous local repositories followed by documentation of identified resources and communities through windshield surveys, photography, and mapping. A historic context was developed for each identified community. The final report included the historic contexts, survey results, and recommendations for further study or designation. The survey was funded through the Certified Local Government (CLG) grant program of the Texas Historical Commission (THC). In partnership with Valenzuela Preservation Studio and the TCHC, a similar survey was also performed for Mexican American communities. THC concurrence was received in November 2016. Both survey reports are available for review on the TCHC website.
