Travis County African-American Settlement Survey
Project Name: Travis County African-American and Mexican-American Settlement Survey
Project Location: Travis County, Texas
Project Type: Historic Resources Survey
Owner: Travis County Historical Commission
In partnership with the Travis County Historical Commission, Hicks & Company historians managed a historic resources survey to identify communities in Travis County that were historically predominantly African American and to document the existing condition of the historic-age resources in those communities. Responsibilities included archival research at numerous local repositories followed by documentation of identified resources and communities through a windshield survey, photography, and mapping. A historic context was developed for each identified community. The final report included the historic context, survey results, and recommendations for further study or designation. The survey was funded through the Certified Local Government (CLG) grant program. In partnership with Valenzuela Preservation Studio and the Travis County Historical Commission, a similar survey was also performed for Mexican-American Communities.
