Killeen City Hall National Register Nomination

Project Name: Killeen City Hall National Register Nomination

Project Location: Killeen, Bell County, Texas

Project Type: National Register Nomination for Killeen High School

Owner: City of Killeen

Hicks & Company historians completed a National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) nomination for the original Killeen High School. Built in 1923, the school served all grades until World War II when Killeen’s population exploded with the establishment of Fort Hood and additional schools were built. After being decommissioned by the school district, Killeen’s oldest extant school building was rehabilitated in 1993 and now serves as Killeen’s City Hall. The nomination package was funded by a Certified Local Government (CLG) grant through the Texas Historical Commission (THC). Project tasks included background and archival research, development of a historic context focusing on education in Killeen, a detailed architectural description, NRHP eligibility recommendations, and photographic documentation. The property was officially listed in the NHRP in May 2015.
